In-depth review

Overview

The ICICI Amazon Pay card is the closest thing India has to a no-brainer credit card. It costs nothing — genuinely lifetime free, with no spend conditions hiding in the fine print — and pays up to 5% back on the country's biggest online store, uncapped. Millions of cards issued later, it is still the benchmark every free card gets measured against.

Rewards and benefits

Prime members earn 5% back on Amazon.in and non-Prime users earn 3%; paying through Amazon Pay at partner merchants earns 2%, and everything else earns 1%. There are no earning caps and no redemption process — cashback arrives as Amazon Pay balance each month and gets spent on your next order, recharge or bill payment. No-cost EMI offers on Amazon sweeten big purchases further. The 1% base rate means the card holds its own even outside the Amazon ecosystem, which is rare for a co-branded product.

Fees and fine print

There is no joining or annual fee, ever. The trade-offs are structural rather than monetary: cashback is Amazon Pay balance rather than a statement credit, so its value assumes you keep shopping on Amazon; the best rate requires a Prime membership; and there is no lounge access or travel benefit of any kind. The 3.5% forex markup makes it a poor companion abroad.

Verdict

If you order from Amazon even a few times a month, this card should probably be in your wallet — as a primary card for Amazon-centric spenders or a free, zero-maintenance backup for everyone else. It asks nothing and pays reliably. The only people who can skip it are those who genuinely avoid the Amazon ecosystem altogether.
