In-depth review

Overview

The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE is a co-branded fuel card built for one job, squeezing the most value out of money you spend at Bharat Petroleum pumps. It carries a ₹1,499 + GST fee and, in return, hands you 25 reward points for every ₹100 of fuel bought at BPCL outlets, which works out to roughly 7.25% value back once you count the fuel surcharge waiver. For a household that runs a car and fills up mostly at BPCL, few cards return more on petrol or diesel.

Rewards and earning

Fuel is the headline. At BPCL outlets you earn 25 reward points per ₹100, and since 4 points are worth ₹1, that is about 6.25% back in points plus the 1% surcharge waiver, so close to 7.25% overall. This accelerated earning is capped at 2,500 points a month, which covers roughly ₹10,000 of BPCL fuel spend before you drop to the base rate.

The card is not only about fuel. Dining, groceries, departmental stores and movies earn 10 reward points per ₹100, with a combined monthly ceiling of 7,500 points across these categories. Everything else earns a flat 1 point per ₹100, or about 0.25%, which is where the card is weakest. You also get 6,000 bonus reward points worth ₹1,500 as a welcome benefit, a matching 6,000 points on paying each renewal fee, and a ₹2,000 voucher when annual spends cross ₹3 lakh. Reward points can be redeemed against fuel at BPCL pumps or through the SBI Card rewards catalogue, and they lapse 24 months after they are earned.

Fees

The joining fee and the annual renewal fee are both ₹1,499 + GST. The renewal fee is waived if you spend ₹2 lakh or more in a card year, an easy target for anyone using it as their main fuel and grocery card. Redeeming points carries a ₹99 fee plus taxes per request, though this is waived when you redeem for fuel at BPCL stations. Revolving a balance is expensive at about 3.75% per month (close to 45% a year), and the 3.5% foreign currency markup makes this a domestic card rather than a travel companion. Cash withdrawals cost 2.5% of the amount, subject to a ₹500 minimum.

Eligibility

SBI Card typically looks for applicants aged 18 and above with a stable monthly income above ₹30,000 and a healthy credit score, ideally 750 or higher. Keep your PAN, an address proof and income proof (salary slips or the latest ITR) ready. Final approval and the credit limit depend on SBI Card's internal assessment.

Who it is for

This card makes sense for car owners and daily commuters whose fuel bills lean heavily on BPCL. If you fill up ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 a month at Bharat Petroleum and also route dining and grocery spends through the card, the rewards comfortably outweigh the fee. It is a weaker choice if you fuel up at HP or Indian Oil pumps, spend little on petrol, or want a single card for international travel and general everyday earning.

Verdict

The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE is a specialist, and a very good one at what it does. The near 7.25% return on BPCL fuel is among the best in the market, and the everyday categories plus a low, easily waived fee round it out nicely. Just respect the monthly caps and the BPCL only condition on the top rate. Pair it with a strong all rounder for non fuel spends and, for the right driver, it pays for itself many times over.
