In-depth review

Overview

The IDFC FIRST Millennia is the entry point into IDFC FIRST Bank's lifetime-free lineup. Like the rest of the range, it charges no joining fee and no annual fee, ever, and layers on a tiered reward points program built around everyday spends like shopping, movies and dining. It sits a notch below the FIRST Select, but for a first credit card that costs nothing to hold, it covers the basics well.

Rewards and earning

The card runs on IDFC's 10X and 3X structure. You earn 10 reward points per ₹200 (10X) on dining, travel and international spends, and on any incremental spends above ₹20,000 in a month. Everything else up to ₹20,000 a month earns 3 reward points per ₹200 (3X). Each reward point is worth ₹0.25, so the 10X rate works out to about 1.25% back, while the 3X base rate is closer to 0.4%. That base rate is modest, so the real value shows up when you spend in the accelerated categories or cross the monthly threshold. On top of points you get a 1% fuel surcharge waiver (up to ₹200 a month) and 4 complimentary railway lounge visits every quarter.

Fees

There is no joining fee and no annual fee, and there is no spend condition to keep the card free. The joining benefits are worth up to ₹1,500: 5% cashback on your first EMI transaction (capped at ₹1,000), plus a ₹500 gift voucher when you spend ₹5,000 within 30 days of card generation. Because the card is lifetime free, you never have to chase a spend target just to dodge a renewal charge.

Eligibility

The Millennia is open to both salaried and self-employed applicants. You will generally need an annual income of around ₹3 lakh or more, and you should be between 21 and 60 years of age. Standard KYC applies, so keep your PAN, an address proof and an income proof (salary slips or ITR) ready.

Who it is for

This is a card for someone getting their first credit card, or anyone who wants a genuinely free everyday card for shopping, movies and dining without tracking a fee waiver. If you spend heavily on travel, want airport lounge access or a lower forex markup, the FIRST Select is the stronger pick in the same family.

Verdict

The IDFC FIRST Millennia is a sensible, no-cost starter card. The joining benefits and the 10X categories give it real value, and since it is lifetime free there is little to lose by holding it. Just go in knowing that the base earn rate is ordinary and the lounge access is railway only, not airport.
