In-depth review

Overview

The IDFC FIRST Wealth is the bank's answer to a simple question: what if a premium credit card did not charge you a rupee to hold it? It is a Visa Signature card that sits above the FIRST Select in the line-up, yet it stays lifetime free with no joining or annual fee and no spend conditions attached. For higher earners who want lounge access, low forex and real insurance cover without an annual bill landing every year, it is one of the more unusual propositions in the Indian market.

Rewards and earning

The reward structure is tiered. Dining, travel and international spends earn 10 reward points per ₹200, and so do incremental spends once your monthly billing crosses ₹20,000. Regular spends and UPI transactions above ₹2,000 earn 3 points per ₹200, while utilities, insurance, railways, FASTag and small UPI payments earn a base 1 point per ₹200. Each reward point is worth about ₹0.25 on redemption, so the 10X rate works out to roughly 1.25% back rather than anything dramatic, and points are valid for 24 months. Booking hotels and flights through the bank's app adds a further 20% and 10% discount respectively, which is a genuine saving for people who travel often.

Fees

There is no joining or annual fee, ever, and nothing hidden in the fine print to reverse that. An add-on card costs ₹499. The forex markup is just 1.5% plus GST, among the lowest on any Indian card and the single strongest reason a traveller would carry this one abroad. Interest is dynamic, ranging from about 0.75% to 3.5% per month depending on your profile, which can be far kinder than the flat rates most issuers charge. Fuel surcharge is waived at 1%, capped at ₹300 a month. Do note that lounge visits are spend-linked rather than unconditional, so treat them as earned rather than guaranteed.

Eligibility

IDFC FIRST positions this as a card for higher-income applicants. You will generally need an annual income of around ₹36 lakh or more, and applicants are typically between 21 and 60 years of age, whether salaried or self-employed. As with any premium card, a clean repayment record and a credit score of 750 or above improve your chances considerably.

Who it is for

This card suits a well-off spender who wants the premium trimmings, lounge access, low forex, strong insurance, without committing to an annual fee for them. If you travel internationally even a couple of times a year, the 1.5% markup alone can save more than what many rival premium cards charge annually. It is less compelling if your spending sits mostly in utilities, rent and insurance, where only the base 1X rate applies.

Verdict

The IDFC FIRST Wealth is a rare thing: a feature-rich premium card that never sends you a fee. The reward value is decent rather than spectacular once you account for the ₹0.25 point value, but the low forex, the airport and railway lounge access, and the bundle of complimentary insurance covers make it easy to justify keeping in the wallet. If you clear the income bar, there is very little downside to holding a lifetime-free card this well-equipped.
