In-depth review

Overview

The RBL Bank Platinum Maxima Plus is a mid-tier rewards card built around lifestyle spending. It pays 10 reward points for every ₹100 you spend on dining, entertainment, grocery and international purchases, and 2 points per ₹100 on everything else. Each point is worth roughly ₹0.25, so the accelerated categories return about 2.5% in value, while a generous milestone structure quietly adds a lot more for anyone who runs sizeable spends through the card.

Rewards and earning

The headline rate looks attractive, but it helps to translate it into rupees. At ₹0.25 per point, 10 points per ₹100 works out to about 2.5% back in the four accelerated categories, and 2 points per ₹100 is roughly 0.5% everywhere else. There is a catch: accelerated earning is capped at 1,000 points a month, which you hit at around ₹10,000 of category spends, so heavy dining or grocery spenders will reach the ceiling.

Where this card earns its keep is the milestone ladder. You get 10,000 bonus points on crossing ₹2 lakh of annual spends, another 10,000 at ₹3.5 lakh, and a further 10,000 at ₹5 lakh, up to 30,000 points (about ₹7,500 in value) in a year. Add the 10,000-point welcome benefit and both annual fees are comfortably covered for a regular spender. Points are redeemable through the RBL Rewards portal for flights, hotels, products and vouchers, with a ₹99 + GST redemption fee.

Fees

Both the joining fee and the annual or renewal fee are ₹2,500 + GST. There is no standard spend-based fee waiver, so the renewal fee recurs each year, though the 10,000-point welcome benefit effectively offsets the first-year joining fee. The forex markup is up to 3.5% on international transactions, which is standard and means the international-category rewards do not fully cover the markup. Fuel gets a 1% surcharge waiver on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000. If you revolve a balance, the finance charge is 3.99% per month (about 47.88% a year), so treat this strictly as a pay-in-full card.

Eligibility

The card is open to applicants aged 21 and above, both salaried and self-employed, with a stable income and a healthy credit profile. A credit score around 750 or higher improves your chances. You will typically need PAN, identity and address proof, and income documents such as salary slips or ITR.

Who it is for

This suits someone whose monthly budget leans towards dining out, movies, groceries and the occasional international spend, and who can realistically push ₹2 lakh or more through the card in a year to unlock the milestone bonuses. The monthly BookMyShow ticket and up to eight domestic lounge visits a year add everyday lifestyle value on top.

Verdict

The Platinum Maxima Plus is a solid, if not spectacular, lifestyle rewards card. The ₹0.25 point value and the 1,000-point monthly cap on accelerated earning keep the base returns modest, and the absence of a fee waiver is a genuine drawback. But the three-tier milestone structure is generous, and combined with the welcome benefit it can return well over the ₹2,500 fee for a consistent spender. If your spending fits the accelerated categories and you clear ₹2 lakh a year comfortably, it earns its place. If you spend less or want a simpler zero-fee card, look elsewhere.
