In-depth review
Overview
The IndianOil RBL Bank XTRA Credit Card is a co-branded fuel card built for people who spend heavily at IndianOil pumps every month. It is not a general everyday card, and it does not pretend to be. The whole pitch is a very high earn rate on fuel, backed by a fuel surcharge waiver, so the more you refuel at IndianOil, the more sense it makes. It comes on both the Mastercard and RuPay networks, and picking RuPay lets you link the card to UPI for quick fuel payments.
Rewards and earning
At IndianOil outlets you earn 15 Fuel Points for every ₹100 spent. Based on the welcome bonus valuation, where 3,000 Fuel Points are pegged at ₹1,500, each Fuel Point works out to about ₹0.50. That puts the fuel earning at roughly 7.5% in points, and closer to 8.5% once you add the 1% fuel surcharge waiver. There is a ceiling, though: accelerated fuel earning is capped at 2,000 Fuel Points a month, which is about ₹13,300 of fuel spend before the top rate stops. On everything else, think groceries, shopping and bills, you earn a flat 2 Fuel Points per ₹100, so the card is deliberately thin outside fuel. New cardholders also get 3,000 Fuel Points, worth about ₹1,500, for spending over ₹500 within 30 days of issuance and paying the joining fee, which effectively cancels out the first-year cost.
Fees
The joining fee is ₹1,500 plus GST, and the renewal fee is the same ₹1,500 plus GST from the second year. That renewal fee is waived if you spend ₹2.75 lakh or more in the previous year, a realistic bar for a heavy fuel user. The 1% fuel surcharge waiver applies at IndianOil stations up to ₹200 a month.
Eligibility
RBL Bank keeps the criteria straightforward. You need to be at least 21 years old and either salaried or self-employed with a stable income. A healthy credit score improves your chances of approval, as with any card. Standard KYC applies, so keep your PAN, an address proof and an income proof ready.
Who it is for
This card earns its keep only if IndianOil is your default fuel brand and you fill up regularly. Someone spending ₹8,000 to ₹13,000 a month on fuel at IndianOil will squeeze real value out of the 15 Fuel Points rate and the surcharge waiver. If your fuel spending is modest, or you split fills across different pumps, the ₹1,500 fee and the weak 2 Fuel Points off-fuel rate make it hard to justify.
Verdict
As a niche fuel card, the IndianOil RBL Bank XTRA does its one job well: high fuel rewards, a useful surcharge waiver, and a welcome bonus that pays for the first year. Just go in clear-eyed about the monthly cap and the modest off-fuel earning. Treat it as a dedicated fuel companion alongside a stronger everyday card, not as your only card, and the maths works nicely.
